Compare the official Star Explorer Stift-Set with standard whiteboard pens to decide which is better for your board game sessions. We break down the trade-offs.
Quick answer
If you own Star Explorer and want the best possible drawing experience on its game boards, the official Star Explorer Stift-Set is the clear choice. Standard whiteboard pens can work in a pinch, but they often lack the precise line quality and easy wipe-off formula that the dedicated set provides.
What the Star Explorer Stift-Set offers
The Star Explorer Stift-Set includes four white chalk markers specifically designed for the game's play boards. The supplied facts note they create clear, highly visible lines that wipe off easily, allowing you to redraw constellations repeatedly. This set is an exact replacement for the pens that came with the game, so you know the fit and performance are guaranteed.
How standard pens compare
Standard dry-erase or whiteboard markers are a common substitute. They are widely available and often cheaper per pen. However, they may not produce the same fine, consistent line on the game board's surface. Some standard pens can leave residue or require more effort to erase completely, which can be frustrating during a game. The tip size and ink formulation vary, so you may need to test a few brands to find one that works well.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Line quality: The Stift-Set pens are formulated for the game board, delivering consistent, clear lines. Standard pens vary widely; some may be too thick or faint. For best results, stick with the official set.
- Ease of erasing: Official pens wipe off cleanly with little effort. Many standard markers leave ghosting or require a damp cloth. The official set saves time and frustration.
- Cost and availability: The Stift-Set costs USD 3.34 (down from USD 4.99). Standard pens can be cheaper individually, but you may need to buy several brands to find one that works. The official set is affordable and guaranteed to work.
